For my birthday, my cousin Vanessa gave me a bottle of Bluewater Blood Orange Infused Vodka. Bluewater Distilling is located in Everett, WA and has a limited seasonal series that they release at different times of the year. The limited editions are only available at the distillery.
Not being a huge Vodka fan, I asked her to help me create a drink that would be super tasty but not overly sweet. Often, I find cocktails made with Vodka are too sugary for my palate. After a few trial and error drinks, she came up with an aromatic drink that had a pleasant sweetness enhancing the blood orange flavor.
Blood oranges are different than a typical naval orange. With it’s beautiful deep red flesh it presents a flavor that is balanced in acidity and has gentle undertones of berries, it is both unique in its appearance and taste.
Vanessa hit on making a Sunrise, which is usually made with tequila, but we substituted vodka instead and kept things on the lighter side leaving out the grenadine. The end result was Delish!

Vodka Sunrise with Blood Orange Infused Vodka and a Hint of Rosemary
- 1 1/2 ounces Blood Orange Vodka
- 1/2 ounce Triple Sec
- 10 dashes of lemon bitters
- 1/2 ounce of pineapple juice
- Rosemary sprig
- 1 Orange curl
- Ice cubes
- Cocktail shaker
- Martini glass or 6 ounce glassware
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Pour Vodka, Triple Sec, Lemon Bitters and Pineapple juice into the shaker. Shake well and pour into glass. May be served up or on the rocks. Place rosemary sprig and orange curl into glass.
